FORDING OPERATIONS - Continued
a.
Release brake pedal (Figure 1, Item 7) and slowly release clutch pedal (Figure 1, Item 8).
b.
Press accelerator pedal (Figure 1, Item 6).
c.
When possible, enter water slowly at a 90-degree angle to shoreline, at minimum speed of
5 mph (8 km/h).
4.
Leaving water.
a.
When possible, select an exit point with a gradual slope 90-degrees to shoreline.
b.
Drive vehicle straight toward shore maintaining throttle speed to prevent vehicle from becoming mired.
c.
As front wheels begin climbing up shoreline, continue to apply throttle as required to maintain forward
motion.
5.
Perform the following steps after fording operations:
a.
Depress brake pedal (Figure 1, Item 7) to slow vehicle several times to dry service brake linings.
b.
Depress brake pedal (Figure 1, Item 7) and clutch pedal (Figure 1, Item 8) to stop vehicle.
c.
Set gearshift lever (Figure 1, Item 1) to Neutral.
d.
Set ALL WHEEL DRIVE switch (Figure 1, Item 5) to REAR DRIVE. Light will go out.
e.
Set INTERAXLE DIFF. switch (Figure 1, Item 4) to Off. Light will go out.
f.
Set DIFF. LOCK switch (Figure 1, Item 3) to Off. Light will go out.
g.
Depress brake pedal (Figure 1, Item 7) to slow vehicle several times to dry service brake linings.
h.
Ensure all equipment is stowed and secured (strapped, tied, etc.) in its designated stowage location.
i.
Ensure trailer connections including safety chains are secure and pintle hook is latched and pinned.
j.
As soon as possible after any fording operations, return vehicle to maintenance for service.
k.
If vehicle was operated in salt water, thoroughly wash interior and exterior of vehicle and flush with
fresh water.
