TM 5-4320-302-144-38. ALTERNATOR (CONT)Location/ItemActionRemarksWARNINGCarbon monoxide occurs in the exhaust fumes of internalcombustion engines and becomes dangerously concen-trated under conditions of inadequate ventilation. Observethe following safety precautions whenever the engine isrunning:Operate engine in a ventilated area only.Do not idle the engine for long periods without maintain-ing adequate ventilation.Be alert at all times for exhaust odors and exposuresymptoms.Be aware: the field protective mask for chemicalbiological radiological (CBR) protection will not protectyou from carbon monoxide poisoning.Expose victims to fresh air, keep warm, and do not permitphysical exercise. For artificial respiration, refer toFM21-11. Seek medical attention. Administer oxygen, ifavailable.GOOD VENTILATION IS THE BEST DEFENSE AGAINSTEXHAUST POISONING.Priming discharge mixture of water and exhaust gases maycause severe burns or injury. Wear gloves and safetyglasses when priming pump.Stand clear of venturi during priming.CAUTIONPrime the centrifugal pump as soon as possible after enginestarts. Rotation of impeller without water in volute willdamage pump components.15. Engine,Start engine. Ammeter on control panel should in-alternator,dicate zero or a positive current flow. If ammeter in-and ammeterdicates a negative current flow, check batteries andelectrical system (paragraphs 4-13 and 4-15). If bat-tery and electrical systems are operating properly, replace alternator. If condition still exists, recheckbatteries and electrical system, then replace am-meter in accordance with paragraph 4-16.4-181
