TM 5-4320-302-144-37. STARTER MOTOR (CONT)Location/ItemActionRemarksWARNINGCarbon monoxide occurs in the exhaust fumes of internalcombustion engines and becomes dangerously concentratedunder conditions of inadequate ventilation. Observe the fol-lowing safety precautions whenever the engine is running:Operate engine in a ventilated area only.Do not idle the engine for long periods without main-taining adequate ventilation.Be alert at all times for exhaust odors and exposuresymptoms.Be aware: the field protective mask for chemical biologicalradiological (CBR) protection will not protect you fromcarbon monoxide poisoning.Expose victims to fresh air, keep warm, and do not permitphysical exercise. For artificial respiration, refer to FM21-1 1.Seek medical attention. Administer oxygen, if available.GOOD VENTILATION IS THE BEST DEFENSE AGAINSTEXHAUST POISONING.Priming discharge mixture of water and exhaust gases maycause severe burns or injury. Wear gloves and safety glasseswhen priming pump.Stand clear of venturi during priming.CAUTIONPrime the centrifugal pump as soon as possible after enginestarts. Rotation of impeller without water in volute willdamage pump components.6. Control panelMove ON-ENGINE-OFF switch to ON and pull outengine throttle 1/2 way. Press starter pushbutton.Pump engine primer handle, if necessary. Engineshould start within 30 seconds.NOTEStarter pinion must be correctly alined with flywheel ringgear.7. EngineIf engine does not start, check starter, electricalsystem, and batteries. If systems are workingproperly and engine still will not start and doesnot crank, notify direct support, and replacestarter. If engine still will not start, refer totroubleshooting guide.4-177
