WARNING
Touching exhaust system during test can cause severe burns.
Carbon monoxide is produced by the internal combustion engine of this pump.
Death may result if personnel fail to observe safety precautions.
Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, deadly poisonous gas which, when
breathed, deprives the body of oxygen and causes suffocation. Exposure to air
contaminated with carbon monoxide produces symptoms of headache, dizziness,
loss of muscle control, or apparent drowsiness. Coma, permanent brain damage,
or death can result from severe exposure.
Carbon monoxide occurs in the exhaust fumes of internal combustion engines
and becomes dangerously concentrated under conditions of inadequate
ventilation. Observe the following safety precautions whenever the engine is
running:
· Operate engine in a ventilated area only.
· Do not idle the engine for long periods without maintaining adequate
ventilation.
· Be alert at all times for exhaust odors and exposure symptoms.
· Be aware: the field protective mask for chemical biological radiological (CBR)
protection will not protect you from carbon monoxide poisoning.
Expose victims to fresh air, keep warm, and do not permit physical exercise. For
artificial respiration, refer to FM21-11. Seek medical attention. Administer
oxygen, if available.
GOOD VENTILATION IS THE BEST DEFENSE AGAINST EXHAUST POISONING.
Priming discharge mixture of water and exhaust gases may cause severe burns or
injury. Wear gloves and safety glasses
when priming pump.
· Stand clear of venturi during priming.
