TM 5-4320-302-144-36.EXHAUST SILENCERLocation/ItemActionRemarksTESTWARNINGTouching exhaust system during test can cause severe burns.Carbon monoxide is produced by the internal combustion engine of this pump.Death may result if personnel fail to observe safety precautions.Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, deadly poisonous gas which, whenbreathed, deprives the body of oxygen and causes suffocation. Exposure to aircontaminated with carbon monoxide produces symptoms of headache, dizziness, loss of muscle control, or apparent drowsiness. Coma, permanent brain damage,or death can result from severe exposure.Carbon monoxide occurs in the exhaust fumes of internal combustion enginesand becomes dangerously concentrated under conditions of inadequateventilation. Observe the following safety precautions whenever the engine isrunning:· Operate engine in a ventilated area only.· Do not idle the engine for long periods without maintaining adequateventilation.· Be alert at all times for exhaust odors and exposure symptoms.· Be aware: the field protective mask for chemical biological radiological (CBR)protection will not protect you from carbon monoxide poisoning.Expose victims to fresh air, keep warm, and do not permit physical exercise. Forartificial respiration, refer to FM21-11. Seek medical attention. Administeroxygen, if available.GOOD VENTILATION IS THE BEST DEFENSE AGAINST EXHAUST POISONING.Priming discharge mixture of water and exhaust gases may cause severe burns orinjury. Wear gloves and safety glasseswhen priming pump.· Stand clear of venturi during priming.4-173
