Torque all the crankshaft willbolts (except rear main bearing bolts) to 120turn freely by hand.to 130 ft lb (163 to 176 N.m) starting withcenter bearing cap bolts and working alter-nately towards both ends of block. Torquerear main bearing bolts to 40 to 50 ft lb (54to 68 N.m). Strike both ends of crankshafttwo or three sharp blows with a soft hammerto ensure proper positioning of rear mainbearing cap. Torque all bearing bolts to 120to 130 ft lb (163 to 176 N.m).50. CrankshaftInstall a dial indicator nearend playcrankshaft timing pulley.checkCheck end play by movingcrankshaft toward dial in-dicator with screwdriver.Keep a constant pressureon pry bar and set dial in-dicator to zero. Move prybar to other side of bear-ing cap. Force the crank-shaft in opposite directionand note amount of endplay on dial. The end playshould be 0.004 to 0.011inch (0.102 to 0.279 mm)with new parts or a maxi-mum of 0.018 inch (0.457mm) with used parts. Ifthere is insufficient endplay, check rear mainbearing for misalignment.Check for dirt on thrustwashers. Aline bearing orreplace thrust washers ifneeded.TM 5-4320-300-146-108
