RadialReplacement of main bearing supports dependsclearanceon the diameter of the crankshaft center bear-ing journal. Measure diameter and determineradial clearance by subtracting journal diameterfrom bearing support bore. Clearance should be0.0020 to 0.0044 inch (0.05 to 0.112 mm).Maximum allowable clearance is 0.0118 inch(0.3 mm). If radial clearance is not within thesetolerance limits, recheck main bearing supports, main bearing bracket, and/or crankshaft. Replacecomponents in that order until clearance is withintolerance limits.36. Side clearanceMeasure width of crankshaft center bearingjournal. Measure width of main bearing bracketat bearing bore. Determine side clearance by sub-tracting bearing bracket width from bearingjournal width. Side clearance should be 0.0079to 0.0157 inch (0.200 to 0.400 mm). Maximumallowable clearance is 0.0197 inch (0.5 mm). Ifside clearance is not within these tolerancelimits, recheck main bearing bracket and crank-shaft center bearing journal. Replace in that orderuntil side clearance is within tolerance limits.6-181
