TM 10-4320-310-145-10.INSPECT/REPLACE CYLINDER HEAD AND VALVE ASSEMBLY (Continued)INSTALLATION/ADJUSTMENT:Too small a clearance will damage piston, cylinder head, and valves. Too large aclearance will result in difficult starting.1Adjust cylinder head clearance.a.Install spacers on one long cylinder head studand one short cylinder head stud. Secure withtwo hexagon nuts and tighten to hold downcylinder.b.Bring the piston to TDC position.c.Measure the distance between the top of thecylinder and the top of the piston with ameasuring device. Subtract measurement fromrequired clearance of 0.0217/0.0256 inch(0.55/0.65 mm). The difference is the thicknessof the gasket required for proper cylinder headclearance.NOTEGaskets come in various thicknesses. If youhave a choice between two gaskets, it is bestto use the thickest one.d.Remove the two hexagon nuts and spacers.2Apply a light coating of grease to both sides of thenew cylinder head gasket. Install new cylinder headgasket on cylinder head studs. Align cylinder headgasket to prevent contact with piston.3Adjust complete pushrod (2) so dimension A equals5.8189/5.8268 inches (147.8/148.0 mm). Loosenlower locking nut (7), turn upper adjusting nut (8) toachieve adjustment and tighten lower locking nut tomaintain proper adjustment. This adjustment isrequired for proper engagement of complete pushrodwith pinion on decompression shaft.4Install new preformed packings (4), shims (5),pressure springs (6) and protection tubes (3) inengine crankcase.5Install complete pushrod (2) closest to injection pumpside of engine.6Install pushrod (1) in engine crankcase on fuel liftpump side.5-22
