Observe the followingprecautions:·Do not inhale vapor.·Work in a well-ventilated area.·Do not use near open flame, sparks, or excessive heat.15. CrankshaftIf crankpins and/or bearing journals are onlycrankpinsslightly outside specified limits because ofand bearingnicks, burrs, or high spots, remove these slightjournalsimperfections with P-C-458 crocus cloth wetwith VV-F-800 diesel fuel oil. Work wet crocuscloth evenly around circumference of crankpinor journal until surface is polished smooth. Ifwet crocus cloth is not effective, use P-C-1673emery cloth, 120 grit for removing imperfec-tions and 240 grit for finishing. Polish smoothwith wet crocus cloth. Use of a piece of raw-hide or other suitable rope wrapped around theemery cloth or crocus cloth and drawn backand forth will minimize the possibility of an out-of-round condition developing (keep the strandsof rawhide apart to avoid bind). If rawhide orrope is not used, the crankshaft should berotated at intervals. If the above procedure isnot effective or imperfections are too great, the crankshaft must be replaced and crankpinsand/or bearing journals must be ground. Pro-cedures for regrinding are not included in thistechnical manual. Send the crankshaft to depotmaintenance for grinding.6-150
