Direct the stream atthe base of the flame.WarningBe extremely careful when using abromochloromethane fireextinguisher in an inclosed area. Apoisonous gas is generated by thecontact of bromochloromethanewith a heated metallic surface.Provide adequate ventilationbefore entering an inclosed areawhere bromochloromethane hasbeen used.c. Refilling and Maintenance.For refilling andmaintenance, refer to field maintenance.27. Fire Extinguisher (MonobromotrifluoromethaneType)a. Description.The monobromotrifluoromethanetype fire extinguisher replaces the carbon dioxide andcarbon tetrachloride type fire extinguishers and in thepast. It is generally suitable for all types of fire, with theexception of fires involved with LOX (liquid oxygen)generating equipment. The fire extinguisher is furnishedwith a disposable-type cylinder.b. Operation.To operate the fire extinguisher.perform the following operations:(1) Remove the fire extinguisher from itslocation.(2) Break the seal by pulling the safety pinfrom the handle.(3) Point the horn at the base of the flame.(4) Depress the trigger for discharge anddirect the stream of contents at the baseof the fire.(5) Replace with a new cylinder immediatelyafter using.c. Replacement of Cylinder.To replace with anew cylinder, perform the following operations:(1) Press the lever to release pressure fromthe old cylinder.(2) Loosen the swivel valve coupling nutand remove the valve assembly from theused cylinder.(3) Remove the instruction band from theused cylinder.(4) Place the new cylinder through theinstruction band.(5) Replace the safety pin in the valve andseal with sealing wire.(6) Attach the valve assembly and tightenthe swivel coupling nut on the newcylinder and replace the fire extinguisherin the mounting bracket.(7) Adjust the instruction band on thecylinder to show maintenance andoperating instructions.d. Maintenance.Weigh the fire extinguisherevery 6 months and replace the cylinder if the grossweight has decreased 4 ounces or more. Lubricate thecylinder neck threads with 1 drop of OE 30 oil beforereassembly.17
