Since the pump is directly coupled to the engine, the pump will run when the engine runs. Running the pump for longer than a few seconds without liquid in the housing will damage the pump. When necessary to run the pump for longer than a few seconds, make sure that suction and discharge hoses are installed and a source of flammable liquid Is available.
