Death may result ifpersonnel fail to observe safety precautions.Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, deadlypoisonous gas which, when breathed, deprives the bodyof oxygen and causes suffocation. Exposure to aircontaminated with carbon monoxide producessymptoms of headache, dizziness, loss of musclecontrol, or apparent drowsiness. Coma, permanentbrain damage, or death can result from severeexposure.Carbon monoxide occurs in the exhaust fumes ofinternal combustion engines and becomes dangerouslyconcentrated under conditions of inadequate ventilation.Observe the following safety precautions whenever theengine is running:Operate engine in a ventilated area only.Do not idle the engine for long periods withoutmaintaining adequate ventilation.Be alert at all times for exhaust odors and exposuresymptoms.Be aware: the field protective mask for chemicalbiological radiological (CBR) protection will notprotect you from carbon monoxide poisoning.Expose victims to fresh air, keep warm, and do notpermit physical exercise. For artificial respiration, referto FM21-11. Seek medical attention. Administeroxygen, if available.GOOD VENTILATION IS THE BEST DEFENSEAGAINST EXHAUST POISONING.4-142
